Monthly Round Up: November
This post I celebrate Thanksgiving by doing some reflecting on my Substack journey
Greetings from the in-laws, its that time of year where we feast on turkey. More importantly, this time should be used to express gratitude. I wanted to reflect on the past year of writing on Substack. As a reminder, I started writing on here in early 2023 without much of a social media following. By the end of 2023 I managed to get 100 subscribers, not much but I felt it was a good achievement. At first, my mantra was that if I can get 10 subscribers, I can get 100. Then once I had 100, I figured if I were diligent I would hit 500 subscribers. Well a few days ago, I surpassed 500 subscribers. Now I should hit 1,000 in a few months right?
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I wanted to thank the 500+ of you that liked my work enough to want to keep seeing more. My Substack dashboard says that my email open rate is a little over 50%, which I believe is pretty good for an email newsletter. So it is encouraging that a good chunk of you actually open the emails to glance at my posts (you’re doing a better job than me, I like reading others Substack’s but I often don’t have time to read them all)
Another area that I am thankful for is those who recommend my newsletter. There are several newsletters recommending mine, but so far the vast majority of subscribers I have gained from recommendations comes from Value Stock Geek’s “Security Analysis”, and Gene Hoots “Reflections on ‘Going Down Tobacco Road’ and Investing”.
Speaking of Value Stock Geek, I am grateful for him allowing to make my podcast debut earlier this year. After the podcast went live, I got a nice surge in subscribers. If you haven’t listened to it already, check out our chat about my investment style and a few companies in my portfolio.
Michael Burry Case Studies
Recently on X I came across a document by CS Investing that is a bunch of Michael Burry write ups from the early 2000’s. Each stock pitch is less than a page and they include a variety of companies ranging from real estate, cruise lines, electronics manufacturing, etc. It has been enjoyable reading these short stock pitches and see how Burry picks up on the few key factors that suggest the stock is undervalued instead of doing deep dives into the minutiae. I haven’t read through all of them yet but the 47 page document will give me something to do this week
